Peace River

Peace River (Also known as The Peace River Oil Sands) was the first operation launched by Renex Exploration Company and continues its expended operations in the region to this day.

In 1986 RENEX® submitted an application to the Oil and Gas Conservation Board (OGCB, now known as the Alberta Energy Regulator) seeking approval to build a 1,000-barrel-per-day in situ oil sands facility at the Peace River deposit, utilizing steam drive technology for oil recovery. The application was approved and operations began in 1987.

The company operates eight active extraction sites, strategically positioned to maximize resource potential and minimise waste. These operations collectively achieve an impressive average daily production of 4,515 barrels of oil per day (BPD), underscoring RENEX®'s commitment to efficient and sustainable energy extraction in the Peace River region.

About Peace River

Peace river (or Rivière-la-Paix in French) is considered the smallest of the Alberta Oil Sands and lies just a few kilometres west of Cold Lake Oil Sands in the Athabasca region of Alberta. The oil sands, which are typically 40 to 60 metres (130 to 200 ft) thick and sit on top of flat limestone, are relatively easy to access. They lie under 1 to 3 m (3 ft 3 in to 9 ft 10 in) of waterlogged muskeg, 0 to 75 metres (0 to 246 ft) of clay and barren sand. As a result of the easy accessibility, the world's first oil-sands mine was in the Athabasca oil sands.

Cold Heavy Oil

Cold Heavy Oil Production with Sand (CHOPS) relies on the natural viscosity of heavy oil, which allows it to flow under standard operating conditions without the need for heat application, such as steam injection. In this process, sand is intentionally brought into the well along with the heavy oil to enhance recovery rates in an environmentally safe fashion. The mixture of sand and heavy oil is transported to the surface, where it is separated and stored in dedicated tanks.
